Destruction Derby

Technical Support and Installation Addendum

Destruction Derby makes use of state-of-the art programming technology and hardware. Because of this, Destruction Derby may require special installation procedures to work properly on your particular configuration.

Minimum Requirements:

486 DX66 mHz, works best with Pentium 90 with 8 Meg Ram

Supports all popular soundcards e.g. Soundblaster, Roland, Adlib.

25 Meg hard disk space required

MS DOS 5.0 or above

Installation Problems?

Destruction Derby is a DOS based program and must be run from DOS. Windows must be shut off completely in order for the program to run properly. To exit Windows 3.1/3.11, just click "File" from the Program Manager and select "Exit Windows". For users with Win95, You must click "Start" from the Start menu, "Shutdown", and "Restart in MS-DOS mode". When you get a C:\>, just switch to your CD ROM drive and type "Install".

It is possible to get the game to run under Win95, in some cases. Please download the Win95 Installation guide PDF file for more info.

Music & Sound Problems?

Once the game is installed, type "Setsound" from your D:\> to select your sound and music cards. If you have a Ensoniq soundcard, then you must create a boot disk and change your SET BLASTER line in your Autoexec.bat file. The XX's must be filled in with a number instead. If it is 100% soundblaster compatible, the numbers are usually I5 and D1. Once that is done, if you still get no sound then you must contact Ensoniq to get updated drivers. If you need more instructions on creating a boot disk, proceed to the boot disk information on the following pages.

Still no music?

Well, in your Autoexec.bat file, make sure that you have a line that sets up your sound environment. It varies from system to system, but generally looks like this:

Set Sound=C:\SOUNDDRIVERS

Where the SOUNDRIVERS is substituted for the directory your sound card's drivers are in (usually C:\SB16)

What? No sound effects?

Also in your Autoexec.bat file, make sure that you have a line that reads somewhat like this:

Set Blaster=Axxx Ix Dx Tx

This statement lets us know what hardware settings your sound card is using. The usual values are hex address A220 , interrupt I5, DMA channels D1 and T1.

Why isn't the mouse responding?

Check in your Autoexec.bat file to see if you have a mouse driver installed. If not, then look for your mouse driver and install it as per the install instructions provided with it.

Once your driver is installed, your Autoexec.bat file should have a line that reads:

c:\mousedir\mouse

Insufficient base memory?

If you do not have sufficient memory to run Destruction Derby on your configuration, free up some DOS memory by either removing some TSR's, or booting from a disk which is free of device drivers and TSRs (TSRs and device drivers are memory resident programs which can take precious conventional memory). In addition, MS-DOS 5.0 and above have special facilities to help you free up DOS memory.

The DOS command CHKDSK will tell you how much free memory you currently have available. Destruction Derby runs without expanded memory. Therefore, your EMM386 line in your config.sys file should read "C:\DOS\EMM386.exe NOEMS".

To free up more base memory, proceed to the boot disk informationon the following pages. A simple Autoexec.bat and Config.sys file will easily free up enough memory to run Destruction Derby.

Getting a "DOS 4gw Error: Not enough memory"?

You must create a boot disk and disable Memmaker, Smartdrive, Share, and also QEMM.

To get this error, you probably have at least one of these programs active. Please proceed to the boot disk information on the following pages.

Wanna play head to head with a friend? No problem!

To do this, both of you must have a copy of Destruction Derby, 2 computers, and a null-modem serial link attached to the same COM ports with the cable being shorter than 6ft. in length.

Destruction Derby does not support modem nor does it support network play in this release.

"That darn joystick just doesn't want to work!"

Just make sure that the joystick is connected to the soundcard.

Don't forget to calibrate it in the "options" menu when you're in the game also.

Destruction Derby is not compatible with the Thrustmaster T1 or T2 steering wheel and pedals.
